The first of two publications for this double review looks at the various roles that the RAF played on & around D-Day.
'D-DAY RAF' is written by retired Squadron Leader Clive Rowley who flew Spitfires as part of the BBMF.

The roles of Fighter, Bomber & Coastal Commands on & around D-Day are explained, as well as the many types of aircraft involved. Stories of a selection of the pilots & crew who flew on D-Day reveal tremendous bravery & sacrifice.
I was delighted to see that the role of the WAAFs & 'The Flying Nightingales' was also remembered with a dedicated chapter. 
Clive has certainly unearthed some fascinating research, as there was much here that was new to me. 
Another interesting chapter looked at several pilots who were most likely to have attacked  Rommel's car in France, which left him seriously injured.

The second publication is written by historian Dan Sharp.
After looking at what happened at Dunkirk & Dieppe, before moving on to the planning, preparation & deceptions carried out before the invasion.
The following chapters that take a look at the weapons & armour of both sides & the formidable Atlantic Wall, prepare the reader for the invasion itself. What then took place at each of the landing beaches is told in individual chapters.
The narrative doesn't end with the successful landings. Subsequent chapters follow the Allies eventual push through Normandy & onwards to the liberation of Paris.

Both publications are of very high quality & are packed with so much to read. Their 130 page size, felt far bigger.
The choice of photos, artwork & illustrations throughout are a fantastic addition, the majority of which I hadn't seen before.
Mortons should also be applauded for making both publications advert free.
Two highly recommended publications that I'm sure will prove valuable additions to readers.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
