In the first of two books, James Daly takes a long overdue look at the planning & subsequent cancellation of a number of Allied Airborne operations that were planned for 1944.
This first book looks at those that would have taken part on or shortly after D-Day.

James provides a comprehensive account of the command structure & the various changes made at the top before D-Day. As always, military planning that involved many strong personalities in commanding positions, involved a large amount of politics to be played out.

Readers will learn about operations such as 'Tuxedo', 'Wild Oats' & the oddly named 'Wastage'. All three were seperately planned to follow in the days after D-Day, but were dependent on the progress of the landed Allied forces. It also meant the Airborne forces would be going with very little notice beforehand. 
Others which on paper appear to be equally, or with even greater risks to landing troops & aircraft, are also mentioned.
These I will leave for readers to learn about themselves.

The incredible amount of research James has done is clear for readers to see. As he says, these operations have been mostly overlooked. 
This first book brings fascinating new information to light for both readers & historians. I now look forward to his next.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
