ARNHEM UMBRELLA

If you have ever watched the epic film 'A Bridge Too Far', then you will no doubt recall the Airborne officer carrying an umbrella. 
Well as much as the film is a little loose with some facts, there was such an officer.
Allison 'Digby' Tatham Warter was 27-years-old at the time of Arnhem and Operation Market Garden. Previously he had been serving in India with the Ox & Bucks Regiment, but frustrated at a lack of action and much to the surprise of his friends, he asked for a transfer. 
Now in the Airborne Regiment, the short lived battle for Arnhem Bridge would be his first time in battle.
Following extensive research covering Digby's life before and after the war, the author has spent a great deal of time trying to sort the truth from the myths.
What is the story behind the umbrella?
Did Digby really attack a German tank or armoured car with said brolly?
Well you will have to read the book.

There is far more to Digby's story at Arnhem and indeed, his time on Dutch soil. The end of the war also reveals a fascinating post-war life in Africa. 
A well respected and brave officer, who had clearly an eccentric side to him. A man whose life story is of such interest that he deserves a great book to reveal it. Thankfully 
Neil Thornton has written such a book. Highly recommended.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered.
