CHURCHILL'S SPANIARDS

Largely unknown, this is the story of the 1072 currently recorded Spanish Republicans who fought in the British Army during the second world war.
Many had escaped the clutches of the Spanish Nationalists and fled across the border to France. From here many would serve in the French Army or become labourers. 
Before even reaching British shores, those now in uniform would gain battlefield experience in the fights for France and Norway.

Along with some excellent photographs, we meet and learn about some of these individuals and follow their stories.
Before the war would end, these men would serve across a range of different units in many countries and theatres of war including SOE, the Commandos and even the SAS. 
Others would be in the fight to liberate Europe by landing on the beaches of Salerno and Normandy, before pushing on towards Germany.
Not all would sadly live to see the war's end and are remembered in photos and the books detailed Appendix listing these men.

As many historians have already said, the story of these men has largely been unknown. Sean's many years of research has created a valuable and truly comprehensive account that has brought their stories to our attention and deservedly so.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
