Author Tony Colvin is the son of one of the highly ranked British Army officers who was involved in the battles covered by this book.
As a child, Tony was taken to the battlefields by his father sparking an interest in this particular part of the war which has resulted in decades of research and interviewing soldiers from both sides. 

This is an immense book that runs to approximately 800 pages. Within that, the author breaks the book down into several parts including the key battles in the Rhine area over a period of four days in February/March 1945. 
Tony also takes an extensive look at both the land and air forces involved, including a valuable chapter on the Germans.

The author's years of research is clearly revealed in his attention to detail, whilst he also shares many of his own forthright opinions in the final part of the book explaining why the British casualties were so high.
A very comprehensive piece of work in which the author deserves great credit.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered.
