INSTRUMENTS OF DARKNESS

First published in 1967 and later updated, this book has been a source of information for historians and authors ever since. Having read a number of Dr Price's books previously, as well as reading many positive reviews, I just had to read it for myself.

The book describes the development of British and German systems of radar through the second world war, as well as taking a brief look at those of the US and Japanese. 

Many systems were also engaged to assist aircraft with navigation to reach their bombing targets, as well as to assist defending night fighters to locate enemy bombers to attack.

For every system developed and used, the opposing side, be that Allied or Axis, was hard at work trying to learn more about them, whilst creating a countermeasure against them.

From 'Gee' to 'Würzburg' and 'Window to 'Knickebein', these are just some of the examples of the systems that are covered in this book. Just how successful each one was and equally how the enemy was in trying to counter them is fully explained.

What is both a technical and equally fascinating subject has been written in an engaging style and I'm much the better informed for having read it.

Almost sixty-years-old and yet Price's book is indeed still deserving of both its popularity and praise.
