PROPOSED AIRBORNE ASSAULTS IN THE LIBERATION OF EUROPE.

In James' second book on cancelled Allied airborne operations, he looks at those which were discussed and planned around the months of August and September 1944.
The objectives for these named operations varied, but included the trapping of German forces, capturing a French port and clearing V-Weapon launch sites in France.
Amongst the detailed accounts for these operations are ideas that would show similarities to later well known second world war operations at Arnhem and the crossing of the Rhine.
It is also clear to see that relationships amongst senior Allied officers from different countries and armed services,  was far more strained than has previously been portrayed. 

The background for each operation is comprehensively described, including what their objectives were, the locations and especially both the planning involved and the discussions held between the commanding officers. 
These operations were often cancelled due to the fluent situation changes on the ground as the Allied forces advanced post D-Day.

Once again, James deserves great credit for his extensive research and I've no doubt the result will prove of great interest to both historians and those researching on this subject. 
Across both books, it has been fascinating to learn all the new information that has been discovered.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
