GENTLEMAN JIM

If you have been watching the BBC series 'SAS Rogue Heroes' then in the recently finished second season the character, Jim Almonds became a much more central role. 
This book, written by his daughter, now gets a welcome republishing and reveals much of his earlier life as well as his real wartime experiences.

As one of the 'SAS Originals', you will also read about many of the now more famous names who Jim served with and who were amongst the first recruited by David Stirling. 
As a man who didn't like to swear or shout, the 'Gentleman Jim' tag would soon stick and was meant with much affection.

Almonds life is a fabulous story in its own right.
Commando and prisoner of war. He then escaped twice, before making it back to Allied lines, before eventually joining the SAS.

This highly recommended read provides a great chance to learn more about this very brave man and the tremendous feats his regiment achieved during the second world war. 

The paperback edition is available now and republished by Pen and Sword Books.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered.
