Following on from her exceptional debut book, MISSION FRANCE, Dr Kate Vigurs reveals more extraordinary women who worked as agents across Europe in German occupied countries.
Showing a remarkable determination to play their part in the second world war, their first fight was often the male attitude towards the female sex.


We learn how once selected, they were trained to use firearms and the art of unarmed combat, set explosives, transmit radio messages and complete the usually dreaded three parachute jumps. It was then the horrible waiting around for their mission's flight.

*As I believe a review should only steer a reader and not give the book away, at this point I believe that you should learn about these remarkable women through Kate's book and not my review. 

These brave women took huge risks in the fight for freedom. Some would be captured by the Gestapo before then suffering horrendous fates. As with many agent's missions, luck and betrayal would often play their parts in their success or failure.

Many of these stories have been lost to time, buried in documents or destroyed in archive fires.
Thankfully as in her previous book, of which this is the perfect companion, Dr Kate shares these previously forgotten or hidden stories and brings these extraordinary women back into the light.

The hardback edition will be published on 13th May by Yale University Press.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
