Naval historian Geirr Haar takes us to the beginning of the second world war and reveals that there was certainly no Phoney War period in the seas around Northern Europe. 

Having described the then current state and strengths of both the Allied and German navies at the outbreak of the war, he moves on to give a comprehensive picture of what took place through the following months.
The albeit short campaign against the Polish navy has rarely been covered before, so I found this particularly interesting. 
The sinking of the Athenia of Ireland, the loss of the Royal Navy carrier, HMS Courageous and the successful U-boat attack at Scapa Flow are just some of the incidents covered through the subsequent chapters.

From the laying of minefields to the early tactics of protecting merchant shipping from U-boats.
The wide-ranging subjects that are covered and the vast amount of information in the many Appendices makes this book a valuable resource for both readers and researchers. 
Another fascinating read from Mr Haarr.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
