ASPECTS OF ARNHEM

The battle for the bridges at Arnhem in 1944 has been followed by a huge amount of books, documentaries and of course, a classic Hollywood film.

In one way or another, all have offered a reason, or reasons, for the failure to capture the 'bridge too far' that was part of Operation Market Garden. 

This book brings together two historians who analyse, not so much the battle itself, but the commanding officers.

They make some very interesting observations, putting forward their arguments well by providing additional sources to backup their points.

One of the most interesting observations regards that of one particular officer, who the authors state, was the one behind the failed operation, yet whose name is never or certainly rarely ever mentioned. 

Conscious of not wanting to spoil the book for others, I shall say no more.

Some readers may query yet another book on Arnhem, but I found this a very interesting read by two historians who have approached the subject very differently, and put forward some fascinating new arguments.
