FIGHTERS IN THE BLOOD

The RAF service of two generations from the same family are intertwined together in this enjoyable memoir.
Written by 'Black' Robertson, he writes of his time in the RAF from 1966 through a remarkable 36-year career. We meet many great characters along the way mixed in with both amusing and touching stories.

At certain points in Black's career there were links with that of his father career. 'Robbie', as he was known, was a second world war Spitfire pilot who was seriously injured in air combat, yet incredibly he somehow managed to crash land his stricken aircraft. Through passages from his wartime diary and personal letters we learn more of Robbie's  service, along with his own thoughts and fears.

With both men's stories cleverly weaved together, this has been a most engaging and entertaining read.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
