GERMAN INVASION OF NORWAY

In the first of two books, leading Norwegian naval historian, Geirr Haar, begins by providing an indepth look at the events of April 1940.
He provides an insight into what was the thoughts, strategies and discussions of all political and military leaders of the Allied, Axis and neutral countries involved. 

A large part of the book then concentrates on the initial naval aspects of the invasion and both the subsequent battles at sea and in the Norwegian Fjords. 
Told in chronological order, Haarr's extensive knowledge of events allows him to provide the times of events for each day. 

As most readers will know, German invasion forces also invaded Denmark who surrended after very little opposition. 
German forces in Norway would also soon control much of the South of the country including the key cities and ports, but the rest of the country would take another two months to capture. That period will be covered in Haarr's second book titled, 'Battle For Norway'.

The Norwegian Campaign has been covered in many books and most try to package all the events into just one volume. Geirr Haarr's knowledge on the subject shines throughout. Despite being written in 2009, I would describe this book as an essential read on Norway and a fascinating one at that.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered. This is an added bonus as most books generally only give Gibraltar a passing mention.
