Ever since the Battle of Britain and the end of the second world war, there has been a massive market of biographies, memoirs and books bringing together pilot's stories.
For those seeking an alternative, 
aviation historian, Ken Delve, has written this indepth reference book packed with many facts and figures. He explains how Fighter Command was formed back in 1936, through to its merging with Bomber Command to become Strike Command in 1968.

Readers will also learn how in the late 1930's, Fighter Command prepared for an expected war with Germany. How it expanded through more airfields, better aircraft and training for its pilots, along with the development of the tactics used in the air for both defending and attacking.

Whilst the second world war takes up a large part of the book, the following Cold War period and the birth of the jet fighter is also covered.
Alongside such an informative narrative, the book has a large and very impressive Appendix, making this an essential reference book that I will certainly return to on many occasions. 
Highly recommended.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered.
