What is still a controversial subject today and continues to divide opinion, author Randall Hansen sets out his own views on both Bomber Command's and the USAAF strategies for the bombing of Germany and Japan in the second world war. 

In the years since the first publication, Hansen admits in this introduction that some of his previous views have since changed.

He provides a wide-ranging analysis on both area and target bombing and how the tactics and doctrine of the bombing war progressed. Alongside his narrative, he includes accounts from some of the civilians on the ground who survived the devastating bombing of their towns and cities by Allied bombers, along with the thoughts of some of those who flew in the RAF or USAAF bombers.

Whatever reader's own views are, Hansen sets out his own arguments very well. By starting the book with the devastating raid on Hamburg in 1943 and finishing with the atomic bombs on Japan, what we can all agree on is the horrendous loss of life to both civilians and tens of thousands of brave airmen.

A very thought provoking and highly readable addition to such an emotive subject.
