Historian and biographer, Richard Mead, turns his attention to the military career of Sir Ralph Cochrane. A career which spanned both world wars, included many promotions and saw him work in a variety of different roles.

Cochrane's life and extensive military career is broken down into individual chapters. Through  the first world war he was an airship pilot, before having a range of Air Staff roles between the wars.
During the second world war he was heavily involved in commanding Bomber Command's aircrew training, before taking over No 5 Group and overseeing 617 Squadron's infamous Dambuster raid.
Later he took command of RAF's Transport Command and held the position through the Berlin Airlift.

These are just some of the highlights of Sir Ralph's story that awaits readers.
Richard Mead's research provides a huge amount of detail covering the many roles and the results of the ideas that Sir Ralph implemented. It is a fascinating story, revealed in this most excellent book.

LUFTWAFFE INTRUDER OPERATIONS OVER THE UNITED KINGDOM  By Chris Goss.  Close to a relative's house in the Lincolnshire Wolds, there is a small memorial to the crew of a Lancaster lost on the night of 3/4th March 1945. Included in the dedication are the words;  'victim of a Luftwaffe intruder.' According to this book, this crew were sadly not the only fatalities that night. Over the course of the second world war, Luftwaffe night fighters would fly planned routes that would bring them close to RAF bases. If lucky, they would find an unsuspecting Allied bomber returning to base and/or would attack an airbase with its payload of bombs.
