The victory at El Alamein in 1942 was a significant first victory for the Allies during the second world war.
Historian Richard Doherty begins with a most useful opening chapter explaining the lead up to these battles and also describes the desert terrain on which the fighting would take place.

El Alamein was fought over in three seperate battles. It would see the removal of General Auchinleck and the arrival of Montgomery, both coming up against a determined rival in Rommel.
Richard Doherty's highly readable narrative provides a fascinating account of what happened on the desert battlefields, the planning and training of Allied soldiers and how difficult decisions taken at the top would eventually see an Allied victory. 
The attention to detail when describing the battlefield and the positioning of the different divisions is incredible.
A fascinating read that is most deserving of the many previous positive reviews that drew my attention to this book.

LUFTWAFFE INTRUDER OPERATIONS OVER THE UNITED KINGDOM  By Chris Goss.  Close to a relative's house in the Lincolnshire Wolds, there is a small memorial to the crew of a Lancaster lost on the night of 3/4th March 1945. Included in the dedication are the words;  'victim of a Luftwaffe intruder.' According to this book, this crew were sadly not the only fatalities that night. Over the course of the second world war, Luftwaffe night fighters would fly planned routes that would bring them close to RAF bases. If lucky, they would find an unsuspecting Allied bomber returning to base and/or would attack an airbase with its payload of bombs.
