GREECE 1941

The premise of Jeffrey's book is to exam the idea that the German Blitzkrieg, so devastating across Europe in 1940, could not necessarily be described as such during the invasion of Greece. 
Whilst the Battle for Greece may have been won in just three weeks, the combined Allied and Greek forces spirited and determined defence reveals that this was far from another straightforward victory for the German invaders, who made several strategic errors along the way.

Before the battle commences, Jeffrey examines the period leading up to 'Operation Marita' and in particular the political aspects for Greece and its near neutral neighbours as they are all drawn into the war.
The narrative then covers the key elements of the battle for Greece and the gradual Allied withdrawal and evacuation. Also included are several useful maps that I found helpful in understanding the various military situations. 

Having not read a book on the Greece campaign for some time, I found this an excellent reintroduction, alongside some excellent and thought provoking comments provided by a very knowledgeable author.

LUFTWAFFE INTRUDER OPERATIONS OVER THE UNITED KINGDOM  By Chris Goss.  Close to a relative's house in the Lincolnshire Wolds, there is a small memorial to the crew of a Lancaster lost on the night of 3/4th March 1945. Included in the dedication are the words;  'victim of a Luftwaffe intruder.' According to this book, this crew were sadly not the only fatalities that night. Over the course of the second world war, Luftwaffe night fighters would fly planned routes that would bring them close to RAF bases. If lucky, they would find an unsuspecting Allied bomber returning to base and/or would attack an airbase with its payload of bombs.
