WHY THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION HAPPENED IN BRITAIN

After first learning about it at school many moons ago, I was very interested to revisit the Industrial Revolution through Jeremy Black's well received book, which is now available in paperback. 

Jeremy begins with the period beforehand, covering the key industries of the time, including textile production and coal mining. 
He also explains the social and political climate across Britain and how both the rural and urban areas differed.

As the use of steam, water and coal increased and with it a greater number of factories, we follow the social and economic changes through the following decades. 
As Britain led the world change in this industrial growth, readers will also learn how Britain compared to other countries, for example India and Japan.

Living in an area that was once heavily mined for coal and currently reading this whilst visiting Lancashire, I am constantly reminded of this important period in British history.
This very readable and educational book has proven to be a great choice to increase both my knowledge and interest.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered.
