In his comprehensive new book, Mark Stille begins by looking at the lead-up to and the planning of the attack. Readers will learn about the disagreements amongst the commanders of the Japanese Imperial Navy and learn just how complacent the Americans were, despite the many warning signs.

The attack itself is described from both sides positions, backed with some extremely helpful maps and diagrams. 
Immediately afterwards President Roosevelt ordered an investigation to seek answers and find those accountable. Many decades later and with the number of investigations and reports in double figures, those answers were still being sought.
Here also the author provides his own thoughts and analysis. 

Described on the cover jacket as the definitive history, it is hard to argue with that claim.
Mark Stille is clearly incredibly knowledgeable and has written both a highly readable and fascinating account of one of the second world war's most important events. 
Highly recommended.

ROYAL NAVY FORCE H 1940-42 This is book 14 in Osprey's 'Fleet' series and is written by naval historian, Angus Konstam. If you have read any second world war books on the Mediterranean war and/or Malta, then it is highly likely that Force H and its well respected commander, V.Adm. Sir James Somerville, is mentioned. Based at Gibraltar, Force H patrolled both the Atlantic and the Western Mediterranean often escorting vital convoys to Malta. It was Somerville who led the fleet in the attack on the French fleet at Mers-el-Kébir and they would also be later involved in the hunt for the Bismarck.  As well as describing the fleet's ships, its commander and their wartime endeavors, the role and defences of Gibraltar is also covered.
